Jan Struther
STRUTHER, Jan. b. London, 6 June 1901; d. New York, 20 July 1953. This was the pen name of Joyce Anstruther, born in London to upper-middle-class parents. After a haphazard education, she became a part-time secretary and a débutante, marrying Anthony Maxtone Graham, of the Scottish landed gentry, in 1923. They had three children. She had done some newspaper journalism and writing for magazines during the 30s, and in October 1937 she began (by invitation) a series of articles for the Court Page of The Times about the life of a middle-class woman whom she called ‘Mrs Miniver’.
