How do I access articles?
The full dictionary is available to subscribers. Individual subscriptions are available for one, three or twelve months. Twelve month institution subscriptions are available for libraries and colleges which require access for multiple users.
If you have already purchased a subscription simply use the link at the top right of the screen to login with your email address and password. Retrieve a forgotten password.
If you wish to access the dictionary using your library's subscription and have not been automatically logged in please contact your librarian for more information.
How do I suggest an amendment or addition to a published article?
Complete the change request form found at the end of the article in question. The editors review these requests and publish updates on a regular basis.
How often is the dictionary updated?
The editors publish new articles and amendments throughout the year.

Can I reproduce content from the dictionary?
For academic texts or scholarly use, we are willing to grant fair use privileges of reproduction without charge to a quote of 300 words; either as a single quote or as several quotes cumulatively. Please reference the Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology (click on "cite this article" for references in both MLA and Chicago styles).

Universities seeking to reproduce reading material for students shall be granted permission to do so for a reduced fee. When contacting us please be sure to state the extent of the material, the number of students it will be available to, and your method of distribution i.e. via online portal or as hard-copy.
How do I subscribe?
Choose the subscription that meets your requirements from the Subscribe page. You will be redirected to our secure online checkout (Hymns Ancient & Modern group checkout) to complete the subscription process. If you have an existing Hymns A&M website account (for Church Times, Church House Bookshop or Canterbury Press, for instance) use this to login. Otherwise register as a new user.
You will need a credit or debit card to purchase a subscription. We cannot accept payment by American Express, Diners Club, cash, cheque or bank transfer.

Individual subscriptions can only be purchased online.
Can I give a subscription as a gift?
Yes - gift vouchers for an individual subscription (1, 3 or 12 months) can be purchased from the website. Choose your preferred subscription and select the gift option on the Subscribe page. After purchasing the subscription you will receive a gift voucher to print.
To activate a gift subscription enter the unique code found on your gift voucher at http://gift.hymnsam.co.uk. The subscription will begin from the date it is activated.

Why are the US subscriptions priced in pounds?
All subscriptions are priced in UK pounds (£). As a guide we have provided the approximate prices in dollars for US subscriptions. The exchange rate used to calculate these guide prices is checked daily, but please bear in mind that the exchange rate used by your bank to process the transaction may differ slightly.
How do I set up a multiple-user subscription for a library or other institution?
An institution subscription provides access to the dictionary for an unlimited number of simultaneous users. After purchasing a subscription you will be able to set up access for your members using one or more of these methods:
IP authentication - register your IP address(es) to provide automatic access for onsite users or for offsite users (via EZ-Proxy).
Referring URL - redirect users to www.hymnology.co.uk from a password protected page on your own website.
Guest user account - create a new username and password to share with your members.
To manage these login methods or to renew your subscription login to the website using your admin account (the username and password set up when purchasing a subscription). Click on 'my account' and select the institution admin tab.
How do I upgrade my trial subscription?
If you have purchased the one month trial subscription for institutions you can upgrade this to a full subscription.
To upgrade: login to the website, click on 'my account' and select the institution admin tab. Choose the type of subscription you require and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the checkout process.
Can I purchase a print edition of the dictionary?
A print edition of the dictionary is currently under discussion and more information will be posted here soon.
Who has compiled the dictionary?
The Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology includes articles written by more than 300 authors from over 30 different countries. It is the result of ten years' research by a team of editors headed by Professor J.R. Watson, University of Durham, UK, and Dr Emma Hornby, University of Bristol, UK.

Is the dictionary available in other languages?
No, the dictionary is currently only available in English.
Can I view usage reports?
Usage reports (showing search and record view statistics) for institution subscribers are updated weekly. To download Excel reports or use the SUSHI compliant web service to access usage data simply login to the website using your admin account and go to 'my account' > 'institution admin'.
