Richard Chenevix Trench
TRENCH, Richard Chenevix. b. Dublin, 9 September 1807; d. London, 28 March 1886. He came from a distinguished family: his uncle Frederic was Lord Ashtown, and his great-grandfather was Bishop of Waterford. He was educated at Harrow School (1819-25) and Trinity College, Cambridge (1825-29: BA 1829; MA 1833), where he was a member of the exclusive ‘Apostles’ club, together with Alfred Tennyson* and Arthur Hallam. After a period spent travelling, he took Holy Orders (deacon 1832, priest 1835), serving a curacy at Hadleigh, Suffolk, under a notable Tractarian, Hugh James Rose.
