John Hatton

HATTON, John. b. perhaps Warrington, Lancashire, date unknown; d. St Helens, Lancashire, December 1793 (buried 13 December). Little is known of his life. He may have been born at Warrington: he was known at St Helens, where he later lived, as ‘John of Warrington’. His address in St Helens was Duke Street. His funeral service was preached at St Helens on 13 December. He is believed to have been the composer of the tune DUKE STREET. Its first recorded appearance is in A Select Collection of Psalm & Hymn Tunes (Glasgow and Edinburgh, 1793), compiled by ‘the late Henry Boyd’.
