I was sinking deep in sin
I was sinking deep in sin. James Rowe* (1865-1933).
This dramatic hymn was written ca. 1912, at the height of the Reconstruction Era urban gospel hymnody movement. It was published by Robert H. Coleman* in one of the many Coleman publications, The Herald (Dallas, 1915). It is a three-verse nautical-imagery hymn, praising Jesus, ‘master of the Sea’, who saves the sinner from sinking. The refrain is ‘Love lifted me!’, ending ‘When nothing else could help/ Love lifted me!’ The tune is called SAFETY and LOVE LIFTED ME.
