James Rowe
ROWE, James. b. Horrabridge, Devonshire, England, 1 January 1865; d. Wells, Vermont, USA, 10 November 1933. The son of a copper miner, James Rowe worked for the Irish government for four years before immigrating to the USA at age 24. He settled in Albany, New York, worked in railroads in New York State for ten years, and became an inspector for the Hudson River Humane Society.
Rowe was a successful lyricist and editor of music journals for prominent music publishers in Texas and Tennessee. In his later years he moved to Vermont and collaborated with his daughter, Louise Rowe Mayhew, an artist, in publishing greeting cards, for which he composed serious and humorous verse.
