This hymn, dated 1983, is one of the most popular American hymns written in the last quarter of the 20th century. It was first published in Hymnal Supplement II (Carol Stream, Illinois, 1987) and first sung at the annual meeting of the Hymn Society of America (now Hymn Society in the United States and Canada*) in Forth Worth, Texas, in July 1987.
