Florence Smith
SMITH, Florence. b. 14 August 1886; d. date and place unknown. Born at Gayton, Norfolk, she probably had some connection with St Christopher’s College, Blackheath (cf. Alda Marguerite Milner-Barry*) for which she is believed to have written the admirable hymn for teachers, ‘Lord and Master, who hast called us’*, ca. 1911 or 1913.
Some confusion exists about the identity of the author. The Historical Companion to Hymns Ancient & Modern, ed. Frost, p. 571, confuses her with a Florence Margaret Smith (the poet Stevie Smith). She is sometimes said to have died at Ledbury, Herefordshire, in 1958, but that was a Mrs Florence Mabel Smith, wife of Samuel Gillies Smith. The Handbook to the...
