Emily Elizabeth Steele Elliott
ELLIOTT, Emily Elizabeth Steele. b. Brighton, 22 July 1836; d. Islington, London, 3 August 1897. She was the daughter of a clergyman, the Rev. Edward Bishop Elliott. She was the niece of Charlotte Elliott*, and also of the Rev. Henry Venn Elliott and his wife Julia Anne (née Marshall), with whom Charlotte lived during her years of ill health. All three were hymn writers (see JJ, pp. 328-9). Emily wrote hymns for her father’s church, St Mark’s, Kemptown, Brighton, and for the Church Missionary Juvenile Instructor, a periodical that she edited for six years (one of its hymns began ‘Have you ever brought a penny to the missionary box?’).
