Thomas Wood
WOOD, Thomas. b. Chorley, Lancashire, 28 November 1892; d. Bures, near Colchester, Essex, 19 November 1950. The only child of Thomas Wood, master mariner, he grew up to love the sea through boyhood voyages with his father. He completed his BMus in 1913 at Oxford and in 1916 entered Exeter College, Oxford, to read for an arts degree. He was rejected seven times for military service in the navy but was able to work from 1917 for the Admiralty. After graduating in 1918 he studied under Charles Villiers Stanford* at the Royal College of Music. In 1920 he obtained his DMus from Oxford.
