This is the day of Light
This is the day of Light. John Ellerton* (1826-1893).
According to JJ (p. 1165), this hymn was written in 1867 and first published in Hymns for Special Services and Festivals (Chester, 1867). This was edited by the Dean of Chester, John Saul Howson (1816-1885) for use in the Cathedral. It was promptly included in the Appendix (1868) to the First Edition of A&M, and it remained in subsequent editions up to and including A&MNS, after which it was dropped by A&MCP. In A&M (1904) there was an additional stanza (5), taken from the text of the hymn in Ellerton’s Hymns Original and Translated (1888), which emphasised the importance of the Eucharist:
