The angel Gabriel from heaven came
The angel Gabriel from heaven came. Sabine Baring-Gould* (1834-1924).
This is a free rendering of a Basque carol, ‘Birjina gaztettobat zegoen’, which Baring-Gould may have come across in his travels (though it is not mentioned in his A Book of the Pyrenees, 1907), or in a collection of Basque carols published by Charles Bordes in Paris in 1897 (see Milgate, 1982, p. 103). It was published in one of a series of pamphlets entitled The University Carol Book (in Parts 1 and 2, in one volume, 1922). A later series of the UCB, edited by Erik Routley*, included it (Part 5, 1961).
A translation into English was given with the Basque music in 200 Folk Carols, edited by Richard Runciman Terry*...
