This is a macaronic carol based on the medieval Latin Cantio* ‘Personent hodie’*. This is the most commonly used English-language version of the Latin text taken from the collection Piae Cantiones* (1582) compiled by the Finnish musician Theodoric Petri Rutha (ca. 1560-ca. 1630).
