On this day earth shall ring. Medieval Carol, translated by Jane Marian Joseph* (1894-1929). Thw first stanza is as follows:  On this day earth shall ringwith the song children singto the Lord, Christ our King,born on earth to save us,him the Father gave us.Ideo. Gloria in excelsis Deo!  This is a macaronic carol based on the medieval Latin Cantio*, ‘Personent hodie’*. This is the most commonly used English-language version of the Latin text taken from the collection Piae Cantiones* (1582) compiled by the Finnish musician Theodoric Petri Rutha (ca. 1560-ca. 1630).
