Jesus, the word bestow
Jesus, the word bestow. Charles Wesley* (1707-1788).
This hymn was not published in Charles Wesley’s lifetime, so that it was not included by John Wesley* in A Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People called Methodists (1780). It was added in a later Supplement before 1831. In ‘Wesley’s Hymns’ (1876) it was printed in two 8-line stanzas:
Jesus, the word bestow, The true immortal seed;. The gospel then shall greatly grow And all our land o’erspread; Through earth extended wide Shall mightily prevail, Destroy the works of self and pride, And shake the gates of hell.
