James Evans
EVANS, James. b. Bath, England 13 May 1777; d. Richmond, Virginia, 18 November 1819. James Evans was the son of Samuel and Ann (Emery) Evans (nda) and was apprenticed as a carver and gilder in his youth. He and his wife, Millicent (b. 16 June 1774) emigrated to New York in 1806. In New York, Evans ran a store that sold art works of various kinds. He first attended John St Methodist Church in New York City in 1806 and immediately became active as a chorister. According to the memoirs of Daniel Ayres, a later chorister, Evans was an excellent singer who could read music at sight and soon formed a choir in the church, often using it to introduce new music to the congregation.
