Helen Waddell
WADDELL, Helen Jane. b. Tokyo, 31 May 1889; d. Highgate, London, 5 March 1965. Born to missionary parents from the north of Ireland, she was educated at Victoria College and Queen’s University, Belfast (BA 1911, MA 1912). After a period of study and writing, she did post-graduate work at Somerville College, Oxford, with two years in Paris (1923-24).
During the 1920s and 1930s she became famous for her lecturing and writing, particularly on medieval Latin and French. She published many books, the chief of which were The Wandering Scholars (1927) and Peter Abelard. A Novel (1933).
