Frederick Luke Wiseman
WISEMAN, (Frederick) Luke. b. York, 29 January 1858; d. Wandsworth, London, 16 January 1944. The son of a Wesleyan Methodist minister, Luke Hoult Wiseman (1822-1875, President of the Wesleyan Methodist Conference, 1872), he trained for the ministry at Didsbury College, Manchester, after working in a bank. He was tutor in Hebrew at Didsbury College (1881-87), Superintendent Minister of the Birmingham Mission (1887-1913), and President of the Wesleyan Methodist Conference, 1912-13. He became Secretary of the Home Mission Department, first of the Wesleyan Methodist Church and then of the Methodist Church (1913-1939).
