Day is dying in the west
Day is dying in the west. Mary Artemisia Lathbury* (1841-1913).
Written at the request of the Methodist Bishop John H. Vincent, founder of the Lake Chautauqua Institution in western New York State. It was written in 1877 for the opening session on 7 August, in two stanzas and a ‘Full Chorus’. It became the traditional opening hymn for the Sunday Vespers Service at 5pm and for the ‘Sacred Music Service’ at 8pm (Young, 1993, p. 314). It was published in The Calvary Selection of Spiritual Songs with music: for use in social meetings (New York, 1878), edited by Charles S. Robinson* and Robert S. MacArthur.
