Wunderbarer Gnadenthron
Wunderbarer Gnadenthron. Johann Olearius* (1611-1684). From Olearius’s Christliche Bet-Schule (Leipzig, 1665). It is a short Christmas hymn in three stanzas, celebrating the wonderful throne of grace: the majesty of God is found in the child in the crib:
Wunderbarer Gnadenthron,Gottes und Marien sohn,Gott und Mensch, ein Kleines Kind,das man in der Krippen find’t,Großer Held von Ewigkeit,dessen Macht und Herrlichkeitrühmt die ganze Christenheit.
The second stanza, in particular, enjoys the paradox of the great God who will become small:
Du bist arm und machst zugleichuns an Leib und Seele reich.Du wirst klein, du großer Gott,und machst Höll und Tod zu Spott.Aller Welt wird offenbar,ja auch...
