William Whiting
WHITING, William. b. Kensington, London, 1825? (baptized 22 January 1826); d. Winchester, 3 May 1878. The end of 1825 is generally accepted as the date of his birth, although various dates from 1823 to 1826 are sometimes given. His father was a grocer in Kensington, and William was educated in Clapham, which the family moved to in 1829. He suffered from a club foot, and the limitations that this imposed probably contributed to his choice of career. In 1841 he entered the Winchester Diocesan Training Institution and in the following year was appointed Master of the Winchester Quiristers’ School.
