William Canton
CANTON, William. b. Chusan, China, 27 October 1845; d. Hendon, Middlesex, 2 May 1926. Born on the island of Chusan, where his father was in the Colonial Civil Service, he grew up in Jamaica, to which his father was posted. After his father’s death the family moved to France. His family was Catholic, and Canton studied at the College at Douai; but he decided to make a career in journalism. After early years in London he moved to Glasgow in 1876, where he became sub-editor and leader writer on the Glasgow Herald. Returning to London in 1891, he was an editor of the Contemporary Review and a manager of the publishing firm of Isbister and Co. He died at Hendon, Middlesex.
