Why should I feel discouraged. Civilla Martin* (1866-1948).
Written in 1905, this is frequently known by its title, ‘His eye is on the sparrow’. C. Michael Hawn* quotes Martin’s own account of how she and her husband became friends with a Mr and Mrs Doolittle in Elmira, New York, she bedridden and he confined to a wheelchair. Commenting on their bright cheerfulness, Martin’s husband was told by Mrs Doolittle that ‘His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.’ This forms part of the refrain:
I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
