Who is She that stands triumphant. Aubrey de Vere* (1814-1902).
According to JJ, p. 1721, this was in Holy Family Hymns (1860) and later collections. This may have originated from de Vere’s Poems (1855), following his conversion to Roman Catholicism in 1851, but this has not been verified.
The earliest printing in Hymnary.org is from A Treasury of Catholic Song (New York, 1915), in a text of three-stanzas with a refrain. This follows the text in de Vere’s Inisfail. A Lyrical Chronicle of Ireland (Dublin, 1863), where the poem was entitled ‘The Church’; in an 1897 edition it became the grander ‘Ecclesia Dei’. The text in 1915 was in three stanzas:
