This is a free translation and paraphrase of the Latin hymn, ‘Ubi caritas et amor’*, associated with the ceremony of washing the feet at the Maundy Thursday service. It is based on the gospel for the day, John 13: 1-13. The original antiphon is interspersed with three verses from the hymn, written in unrhymed lines that are to be sung to the original Gregorian chant.
