When morning gilds the skies

When morning gilds the skies. Edward Caswall* (1814-1878). A version of this hymn in six 6-line verses was published in A Collection of Catholic Hymns, edited by H. Formby and J. Lambert (1853). A longer version was printed in Caswall’s The Masque of Mary, and Other Poems (1858). It was in 28 couplets, with a third line, ‘May Jesus Christ be praised’, printed (after the first couplet) as a refrain, ‘May, &c’. This was reprinted in Caswall’s Hymns and Poems, Original and Translated (Second Edition, 1873). It is a translation of a German hymn, ‘Beim frühen Morgenlicht’ (‘At early morning light’) from Sebastian Pörtner’s Katholisches Gesangbuch (Würzburg, 1828), which has the refrain, like...
