What would we give to our beloved. Elizabeth Barrett Browning* ( 1806-1861).
This consists of stanzas taken from ‘The Sleep’, a poem of nine 6-line stanzas published by E.B. Barrett in 1838 in a collection entitled The Seraphim, and other poems (this was before she married Robert Browning*). The stanzas that make up this hymn were 2, 4, 6, and 9. The poem was prefaced by ‘“He giveth His beloved sleep:” - Psalm cxxvii. 2.’:
What would we give to our beloved?The hero’s heart to be unmoved,The poet’s star-tuned heart to sweep,The patriot’s voice to teach and rouse,The monarch’s crown to light the brows?He giveth His belovèd – sleep.
‘Sleep soft, beloved!’ we sometimes say, Who have no time...
