We love the place, O God. William Bullock* (1798-1874) and Sir Henry Williams Baker* (1821-1877).
During his time as a missionary at Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, Bullock built a church there for which he wrote a hymn beginning ‘We love the place, O Lord’*. This hymn was published in Bullock’s Songs of the Church (Halifax, Nova Scotia, printed for the author, 1854), in six stanzas. It was substantially rewritten by Baker for the First Edition of A&M. The two texts, printed in JJ, pp. 1243-4, are entered under ‘We love the place, O Lord’. Baker altered the first four stanzas, and substituted three of his own for Bullock’s final two.
