We know not a voice of that River. Christina Georgina Rossetti* (1830-1894).
First published in Rossetti’s The Face of the Deep: a Devotional Commentary on the Apocalypse (London and New York, 1892) and then in Verses (1893), of which ‘The Face of the Deep’ formed one part. The Face of the Deep was a collection of poems following the Christian Year according to the Book of Common Prayer.
The poem had five stanzas, based on Revelation 22: 1: ‘And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.’ It was entitled ‘Whitsun Monday’, referring to the BCP’s ‘Monday in Whitsun-Week’.
