Washington Gladden
GLADDEN, Washington. b. Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, 11 February 1836; d. Columbus, Ohio, 2 July 1918. Born to school teachers Solomon Gladden and Amanda Daniels, who named him Solomon Washington Gladden. Following his father’s early death Gladden was raised by an uncle. While attending Oswego Academy he became a newspaper apprentice for the Oswego Gazette and dropped his first name. He attended Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts (BA 1859). Following graduation he was licensed to preach by the Congregational Church, and ordained the following year, serving churches in Brooklyn, New York (1860-61), Morrisania, New York (1861-68), North Adams, Massachusetts (1868-71), Springfield,...
