Walahfrid Strabo

WALAHFRID Strabo. b. 808/9; d.August 849. From a poor Swabian family, Walahfrid Strabo (Strabo means ‘the squinter’) entered the Abbey of Reichenau* as a boy. Taught by Grimald, he spent two years (827-29) at Fulda completing his studies under Hrabanus Maurus*. After nine years as tutor to Prince Charles at the royal court of Aachen (829-38), he was appointed Abbot of Reichenau by Louis the Pious. This appointment was recognised by the monks after the intervention of Louis the German in 842; by this time Walahfrid had spent two years in exile at Speyer, during which time he wrote Libellus de Exordiis et Incrementis, a treatise about liturgical history and practice.
