Wär Gott nicht mit uns diese Zeit. Martin Luther* (1483-1546). This version of Psalm 124, ‘If God had not been with us at this time’ ( see ‘Now Israel’), was first published in the Geystliche gesangk Buchleyn (Wittenberg, 1524). It had three 7-line stanzas, and was entitled ‘Der cxxiiij Psalm, Nisi quia dominus etc.’ It parallels the more elegant translation by Justus Jonas*, ‘Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält’*, which has been mainly preferred in EG. However, the compilers of EG used two of Luther’s stanzas in EG 297 to make a composite text: for stanza 3 (‘Auf uns so zornig ist ihr Sinn’) and stanza 4 (‘Gott Lob und Dank, der nicht zugab’), with the word order in stanza 3 changed from...
