W. Russell Bowie
BOWIE, (Walter) Russell. b. Richmond, Virginia, 8 October 1882; d. Alexandria, Virginia, 23 April 1969. Bowie was educated at Harvard University (BA 1904, MA, 1905), and Virginia Theological Seminary (BD 1909, DD 1919). He was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1909 and served Emmanuel Church, Greenwood, Virginia (1909-11); St Paul’s Church, Richmond, Virginia (1911-23, with hospital chaplaincy in France during World War I); and Grace Church, New York City (1923-39). He became Professor of Practical Theology and Dean of Students at Union Theological Seminary (1939-50), and then Professor of Homiletics at Virginia Theological Seminary (1950-55).
