Vox clara ecce intonat. Latin, perhaps 5th century.
This hymn is found in English breviaries (Hereford, York, Sarum). It is anonymous, prescribed for Lauds in Advent in the New Hymnal (see ‘Medieval hymns and hymnals’*). Milfull (The Hymns of the Anglo-Saxon Church, pp. 186-7) prints the text from the New Hymnal, beginning with commas, ‘Vox, Ecce, Clara, Intonat’, and ending with a doxology, ‘Deo patri sit gloria’ (also found in the Moissac Breviary: see Analecta Hymnica 2. 35, where its title is ‘In matutinis laudibus’. Cf. AH 51.48-9 (no 49), Walpole, Early Latin Hymns, p. 304, no. 86).
