Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her
Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her. Martin Luther* (1483-1546).
Written ca. 1534-35, and first published in Geistliche Lieder (Wittenberg, Klug, 1535). Jenny 33. It had fifteen 4-line stanzas, and was entitled ‘Ein kinderlied auff die Weinacht Christi’ (‘a children’s song for Christmas’), the text of the 1843 edition adding ‘vom Kindlein Jhesu, Aus dem ij Cap. des Evangelij S. Lucas gezogen’. The first stanza is closely modelled on a secular folk-song (Jenny, Luthers geistliche Lieder, no.33, p. 110):
Ich komm aus frembden landen her, und bring euch vil der neuen mär, Der neuen mär bring ich so vil, mer dann ich euch hie sagen wil.
