Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich. Martin Luther* (1483-1546). This is Luther’s version of a simple Latin antiphon ‘Da pacem, Domine’. It was written in prose, and then versified: both are printed in Wackernagel, Das Deutsche Kirchenlied, III. 21-2, in a text taken from Geistliche lieder auffs new gebessert (Wittenberg, 1531) with the title ‘Da Pacem Domine. Deudsch’. See also Jenny, Luthers geistliche Lieder, no. 30, p. 275. It was in the Rostocker Gesangbuch of 1531, and therefore in the lost Wittenberg hymn book of 1529.
