Brief History of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines
The end of Spanish rule in the Philippines in 1898 marked the end of the Roman Catholic Church’s exclusive control over religious affairs, creating opportunities for Protestant mission* churches from the United States to establish their work in the country. (See Philippine hymnody* for a detailed account of Roman Catholic contributions.) The initial wave of Protestant churches — Presbyterian, Methodist, Congregational, Disciples, and Brethren — began arriving in 1899, followed later by the American Baptist, Episcopal, and Christian Missionary Alliance churches.
