Tommy Coomes

COOMES, Tommy. b. Long Beach, California, 19 May 1946. Singer/songwriter, producer, worship leader and music executive, Coomes played a key role in ‘Jesus Music’ in the 1960s and 1970s and development of worship music repertoire for the church in the late 20th century. Raised in Lakewood, California, he played trumpet and guitar in high school, studied music at California State University, Long Beach, and enlisted in the US Army. A year after leaving the army in 1969 he met a nucleus of hippie musicians in Orange County, California involved in the Jesus Movement, and was ‘converted to Christ’ while filling in with the band at an anti-drug rally led by Pastor Chuck Smith (1927-) of Calvary...
