To my humble supplication. ?Joseph Bryan (late 16th – early 17th century). This is from a metrical version of Psalm 86. It appeared in four 4-line stanzas in EH, and later in SofP and elsewhere. Percy Dearmer* later said that it had been included ‘in order to carry a tune which otherwise Vaughan Williams could not have included in the book’ (Songs of Praise Discussed, 1933, p. 78). The date given for Joseph Bryan in EH is ‘c. 1620’. It would seem probable that this was the result of a discussion between Vaughan Williams* and Dearmer, or one of the other editors, who would have known of the metrical psalm from Select Poetry Chiefly Devotional of the Reign of Queen Elizabeth, edited by...
