To a maid engaged to Joseph. Gracia Grindal* (1943- ).
First published in The Yes of the Heart (Lincoln, Nebraska, 1984), edited by Howard (‘Rusty’) Edwards*. This hymn on the Annunciation is typical of Grindal’s attention to the important episodes in the New Testament (cf. ‘A light from heaven shone around’*). The six 3-line stanzas make a strikingly successful use of repetition and rhyme. Since its first printing, it has been included in UMH, the Canadian VU, and The Presbyterian Hymnal; and in Singing the New Testament (ed. Joyce Borger, Faith Alive, 2008).
