When this hymn was first published in Psalm Praise (1973), and often when it is reprinted in more than 20 other collections, it has been quite properly headed as representing the first 18 verses of Psalm 89, ‘a small part of one of the longer psalms’. The writer, however, acknowledges that ‘the description “based on” is not meant to claim any very exact correspondence with the text’ (A House of Praise, 2003, p. 380).
