Thou Shepherd of Israel, and mine. Charles Wesley* (1707-1788).
First published in Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures (Bristol, 1762) in three 8-line stanzas, on The Song of Solomon 1: 7. It was not included in John Wesley*’s Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People called Methodists (1780), perhaps because he disliked its emotionally-charged language; but after his death it was added in a 1797 edition of the Collection and appeared in all subsequent Methodist hymnbooks until omitted by Singing the Faith (2011). It is found in the Song Book of the Salvation Army (1953 and 1986 editions) and in a number of books of evangelical provenance. The original text has not...
