Thomas Attwood Walmisley
WALMISLEY, Thomas Attwood. b. London, 21 January 1814; d. Hastings, Sussex, 17 January 1856. The son of Thomas Forbes Walmisley, a composer and organist, he studied music under his father and later with his godfather, Thomas Attwood*, organist of St Paul’s Cathedral and the Chapel Royal. He graduated MusB from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1833, and while still an undergraduate (studying for a mathematical Tripos — BA 1838, MA 1841), he succeeded John Clarke-Whitfield as Professor of Music in the University in 1836. He played at least four services on a Sunday at Cambridge, at Trinity and St John’s, but his choir was one of the best in England and for them he composed a number of fine works...
