This world is all enchanted ground

This world is all enchanted ground. Benjamin Beddome* (1717-1795).  This hymn was found in Hymns Adapted to Public Worship (1817, 1818), compiled by Robert Hall some twenty years after Beddome’s death (JJ, p. 1592). It appeared in a section entitled ‘Historical Passages’ (i.e. based on episodes in the Old and New Testaments). It was entitled ‘Lot looking towards Sodom. GEN. xix. 16, 17.’ It had three stanzas:  This world is all enchanted ground,   Oh whither shall I fly; The vengeful flames are kindling round,   And if I stop, I die. When some kind hand has brought me forth,   How lingering is my pace! Lord, either drive me by thy wrath,   Or draw me by thy grace.  Oh let me not a moment...
