This day God gives me. James Quinn* (1919-2010).
Based on St Patrick’s Breastplate, this hymn comes from Quinn’s first collection, New Hymns for All Seasons (1969). It is a companion-piece to ‘Christ be beside me’*. It has been described by the author as ‘a morning prayer of thanksgiving, exulting in creation’ (quoted in Milgate, 1982, p. 200). It was quickly taken up by WOV (1977), and has since been found in many hymnals. In Britain it entered the A&M tradition in MHfT (1980) and thus in A&MNS (1983), followed by A&MCP (2000) – though not by A&MRW (2013).
