Think gently of the erring one. Julia A. Carney* (1823-1908).
Published in Hymns for Christian Devotion (Boston, Mass.: N.E. Universalist Publishing House, 1845), edited by John Greenleaf Adams and Edwin Hubbell Chapin (see Unitarian-Universalist hymnody, USA*), where it was in a section entitled ‘Philanthropic Subjects’. It was titled ‘Compassion for the Sinning’, and described as by ‘Miss Fletcher’ (Carney's maiden name). JJ, p. 1164, noting this, described her as ‘a writer to us otherwise unknown’:
