They come from the east and west. Thoro Harris* (1874–1955). This gospel hymn, ‘They Come’, first appeared in Harris’ convention collection Revival Praise: Erikson Campaign Special (Chicago, 1917), where he is listed as the translator of a German text. The first musical score available in is in Soul Inspiring Songs (1929), edited by R.E. Winsett (1876–1952), with the tune by Russell DeKoven, Harris’s pseudonym. This collection indicates that the text is Harris’ translation of ‘Sie kommen von Ost und West’, an original German text and tune composed by Swedish evangelist, singer, composer, and publisher Johannes A.
