BOWMAN, Thea (Bertha). b. Yazoo City, Mississippi, 29 December 1937; d. Canton, Miss., 30 March 1990. Bowman was a charismatic figure, known for her work with African American communities and congregations. She was a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Bowman attended Viterbo College (now University) (BA 1965), and The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC (MA 1969; PhD 1972). Having taught at the grade school, high school and college level, she returned to her native Mississippi where her work in cultural integration and African-American worship in the Roman Catholic tradition gained her national recognition.
