The love of Jesus calls us. T. Herbert O'Driscoll* (1928-2004). In his notes on this hymn O’Driscoll commented, with a wry twinge: ‘So often when we ask sermonically for folk to answer our Lord’s call, we offer the call with such lack of precision and focus that it is rather miraculous that some actually respond! I have tried to bring some focus to what our Lord might be calling his people to today’ (Praise, My Soul, Notes on the Hymns, p. 80). The love of Jesus calls us in swiftly changing days, to be God’s co-creators in new and wondrous ways, that God with men and women may so transform the earth, that love and peace and justice may give God’s kingdom birth (stanza 4).
