The homeland! the homeland
The homeland! The homeland! Hugh Reginald Haweis* (1838-1901).
According to Gordon Taylor, this was first published in Good Words: An Illustrated Monthly Magazine (March 1867), edited by Norman Macleod* (author of ‘Courage, brother! do not stumble’*). It was entitled ‘A Hymn of the Home-land’, and had six 4-line verses. A tune, HOMELAND, was written for it by Arthur Sullivan*, which required three 8-line verses. It is said to have been a favourite hymn of Charles Haddon Spurgeon*, although it is not in the 1871 edition of Our Own Hymn Book (but Haweis had a high opinion of Spurgeon, and the two may well have been friends). The hymn is found in MHB and in the Song Book of the Salvation Army...
