The heavens declare thy glory

The heavens declare thy glory. Thomas Rawson Birks* (1810-1883).  This paraphrase of part of Psalm 19 is almost unknown in Britain and Ireland after 1920. It comes from Birks’ The Companion Psalter: or, Four hundred and fifty versions of the psalms, original and selected, for public or private worship (1874). It is found in The Hymnal Companion to the Book of Common Prayer (Second Edition, 1877, Third Edition, Revised and Enlarged, 1890), and other books of the early 20th century, such as ICH3 (1915, 1919) and Lady Victoria Carbery*’s Church Hymnal for the Christian Year (1917).
